Summer Look: Mermaid Hair
I love having long mermaid hair in the summer. Not only is it convenient for putting up in buns, braids and ponies, but I also love how it looks left down and natural. Long, wavy hair with sunglasses, an airy dress and strappy wooden clogs ... that’s my perfect summertime look. I’ve been growing out my hair for two years after cutting a chin length bob, and I’m finally near mermaid territory again. Just in time for summer!
The nice thing about mermaid hair is that it’s beautiful and sexy, but also casual. It’s not over-blown or over-curled, which takes only a little effort to achieve and even less effort to get it to hold.
You can achieve mermaid hair in three ways: air drying, blow drying, or using a curling iron.
Air drying works best for those with natural wave. I part my hair in the center (the best part for mermaid hair), apply product and then keep my fingers out of it until its dry. Then I shake it all around for volume.
To get this look with a blow dryer, flip your head upside down and blow-dry your roots for volume. Flip back up once your roots are dry, then twist sections to form loose waves. Keep blow drying each twisted section until the hair is dry. Shake it out for volume and piecey-ness.
The last way to get this look is with a one-inch curling iron. Take different size sections and loosely wrap them around the barrel. You’re going for more of a “bend” than a real curl with this technique. When you’re done, shake it out—like I even have to tell you!
Mermaid hair is all about texture, so make sure you find a good product to get that naturally tousled look. As always, mousse is a great foundation product, but my absolute favorite for beachy mermaid hair is Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist, which makes me want to grab a shell bra and roll around in the sand.

The London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony took place at 9pm on 27 July 2012.
Titled 'Isles of Wonder', the Ceremony welcomed the finest athletes from more than 200 nations for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, marking an historic third time the capital has hosted the world’s biggest and most important sporting event.
The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation. It was a Ceremony 'for everyone' and celebrated contributions the UK has made to the world through innovation and revolution, as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people.
The spectacular finale of the event saw the Olympic Cauldron, formed of 205 copper petals representing the competing nations coming together in London for the Games, ignited by seven young Torchbearers nominated by Britain’s past and present Olympic and sporting greats.

3 Surprising Facts About Women, Love, and Sex
Science writer Patricia Barnes-Svarney is used to getting a lot of questions. Questions like “why do women crave more sex in the summer?” and “why is a guy with good dance moves so appealing?” and “are my friends bad for my love life?”
In her book published last month, Why Do Women Crave More Sex in the Summer? 112 Questions That Women Keep Asking — and That Keep Everyone Else Guessing, Patricia Barnes-Svarney answers all those and more, tackling 112 questions about women (and women and men) and the science behind the answers. Her timing was great: “Until just a couple decades ago, there were very few studies about women’s science—most of the research was conducted with men or a combination of men and women,” Barnes-Svarney explains. “Now (finally!) there are many studies that include more, or only concentrate on, women—from youth to maturity.”
We couldn’t include all 112, but here are our top three most intriguing insights from the book:
1. Women really do crave more sex during the summer.
Okay, so you may have guessed that from the title of the book. But did you know that part of the reason we get all hot and bothered during the summer is school? We’re conditioned to respond to the “bell”—when school’s out, we’re ready to play, and we feel that urge even as adults. Add to that the tighter, skin-baring clothes and the mood-boosting effects of the sun, and you’ve got a recipe for feeling frisky.
2. Falling in love comes at a cost.
The cost: two friends, to be exact. Researchers found that when new romance comes into a person’s life, their circle of close friends loses two people on average. One explanation is the need for emotional contact, which fuels the maintenance of your friendships—and which you need less of when you have a new love interest.
3. Pregnancy makes your brain smaller.
“Pregnancy brain” is no myth—there’s a reason you feel so foggy when you’ve got a bun in the oven. According to a study in the American Journal of Neuroradiology, a woman’s brain volume decreases by about four percent during pregnancy (one study specified that this occurred during the third trimester), as the brain restructures itself. But don’t worry—it returns to normal size within six months after the baby is born. And the coolest thing? Even though the brain shrinks in some areas, the forebrain that’s responsible for problem-solving and higher reasoning actually gets bigger and better!

Three Ways I Saved Big Bucks on My Wedding
1. Book the Venue Way in Advance
While there’s something to be said about just enjoying the engagement right after he pops the question, I think you’re doing yourself—and your budget—a disservice by not looking at and booking a venue within a month or two of receiving the ring. Think about the type of settings you want for the exchanging of vows and after party, set up appointments with site coordinators, and hit the ground running on the weekends. Once you have the place(s) picked out, choose the time of year you’d like to marry. This is where you can save big bucks. For instance, I wanted a wedding in late spring, but Saturdays from the first of May through the end of September cost $11,000 (mind you, this is for the venue alone). So I pounced on the last Saturday in April, which was marked at $7500—a common markdown employed by wedding sites to entice bookings during colder months. I was set on a Saturday wedding, but if the day doesn’t make a difference to you, think about booking a Sunday or Friday event—both which is typically significantly less.
2. BYOB
Depending on the venue and the caterer you’re working with, you may be allowed to supply the event with your own spirits. I was fortunate enough to have this option, which my husband and I took advantage of. We set about researching reds and whites with 90+ point ratings, found one of each we liked, and waited for BevMo’s 5-cent sale, where we purchased 12 cases of wine for approximately the cost of seven. For beer and the hard liquor required to make our signature cocktail, we used Costco coupons and stocked up on just enough to keep the party going—all at a deep discount.
3. Nix the Extra Reception Fixings
The chairs don’t have seat covers and each person only got one plate. It saved me more than $600. So far no one has complained about the break in tradition.
Sometimes less is more. While it may be tempting to cover dull walls with pretty linens, swath the room in colored lighting complimentary to your color scheme, and drape seats with luxurious chair covers, these extras can add thousands of dollars to your betrothal bottom line. Don’t fight the feel of your reception hall. For instance, my reception was set in a cross between a cabin and barn. I embraced the rustic ambiance of the room and added elegant touches in the form of beautiful flower arrangements set atop candelabras—that’s it. Despite the persistence of my caterer, I said no to chair covers (which saved me $525) and charger plates (a $150 savings). And at the end of the day, I was completely happy with how the reception room looked (priceless).

Life throws a brick at your head
A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street， going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something.
As his car passed, one child appeared, and a brick smashed into the Jag's side door. He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where the brick had been thrown.
He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing?" Building up a head of steam， he went on "That's a new car and that brick you threw is gonna cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"
“Please, mister, please, I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!” pleaded the youngster." It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.
Sobbing, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me."
Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be okay.
"Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. He never did repair the side door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.
